Our History, Values & Board of Directors

Founded in 2022 by Betsy and Charlie Hoke, the Hoke Family Foundation is a multi-generational foundation, and as a family, we believe in the power of shared experiences, sharing stories and the value of laughter and fun.

Our goal is to invest in, and advance the practices of individual artists and organizations that create, produce, and promote the visual arts. We also seek to create a culture within the foundation that is imbued with the family’s spirt.

Working as a family, we are guided by the following shared beliefs and values

Artistry and Creative Expression

We value the pursuit of artistry and the promotion of creative expression. We believe that the arts are an essential part of life, enriching our human experience and contributing to communities’ overall well-being.

Curiosity and Listening

We believe listening to and understanding those we serve leads to relevant, responsive and informed grantmaking. We are committed to ongoing evaluation, analysis, and evolution of our work and practices.

Partnerships and Collaborations

We value the work of the many arts and cultural organizations, artists and creative community leaders across Wisconsin and the United States that could extend the reach and impact of our grantmaking. We recognize these stakeholders as key allies in fulfilling our mission.

Equity and Access

We believe that our work is richer when diverse perspectives are fully engaged. Through ongoing inquiry, dialogue, and action on the issues of equity and access, we strive to remove barriers to sustained artistic practice and careers in the visual arts, as well as barriers to engaging with and learning in the arts.

Stewardship

Our deepest responsibility is to use all of our resources for mission impact. We deploy the Foundation's resources in a transparent manner and seek to maximize our relevance, credibility, and effectiveness.
